The Fort McMurray Giants kicked off the festivities with a 10-5 home victory over the Brooks Bombers on Sunday. They defeated the Bombers again on Canada Day with a 7-3 victory.

Fireworks exploded over MacDonald Island Park on Sunday at 11 a.m., as thousands of people watched them from the island, across the Athabasca River, at the Snye and from vantage points throughout the city. The light show capped off a concert from Canadian rock band 54-40.

The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo started Canada Day with a free pancake breakfast and scavenger hunt at Kiyam Community Park, while Heritage Village hosted a vendors’ market throughout the day.

The annual Canada Day parade saw thousands of people line Franklin Avenue as firefighters, veterans, police officers, multicultural and community groups, and local businesses waved, threw candies and mementos at people, and handed out flags.

Mayor Sandy Bowman and Councillor Keith McGrath both drove in the parade, while councillors Jane Stroud, Shafiq Dogar and Allan Grandison marched. Energy Minister Brian Jean carried the Flag of Alberta as he stopped and yelled “happy birthday to the best country in the world!”
